Apply for the Privacy Seal

Before applying for the BBBOnLine Privacy Seal your company should have adopted and posted an online privacy notice (see the sample privacy notice for guidance.) You should review the eligibility requirements if you have not already done so, download and read the Participation Agreement (found under Step 3) to be sure that you will be able comply with this document and gather any documents and information you may need to complete the Privacy Profile (i.e., MIS security procedures, personnel manual, third party contracts, and Internet security procedures.)

To apply for the Kid's Privacy seal follow the steps outlined below. You will be prompted to also complete additional statements within your Privacy Profile which deal specifically with children's requirements. Once you have completed the process you will be eligible to carry the standard privacy seal, in addition to the Kid's seal.
To apply for the Japanese Privacy seal also follow the steps below. Once you have completed the process you may request an application for the use of the Japanese seal as well. You will have to complete the following Addendum Participation Agreement and pay the appropriate fee (as stated in the agreement). Japanese Seal Participation Agreement .
Step I - Complete the Business Application and Pay Annual Assessment Evaluation Fee
Complete the business application by following the link at the bottom of this page. The annual assessment evaluation fee is based on your company's annual sales, this includes both online and off-line sales combined (Pricing Information). The annual fee will be calculated as you complete the application
Step II - Become a member of your Better Business Bureau
To qualify for the BBBOnLine Privacy seal, a company must first qualify for membership in either the BBB where it is headquartered or the Council of Better Business Bureaus. Please indicate on the Business Application if the company is already a member of either. More information on becoming a member will be sent via email after you submit the Business Application.
Step III - Sign and Submit the Participation Agreement
Please download & sign a copy of the Participant (License) Agreement .

Your Privacy Profile will not be processed until we receive the signed Participation Agreement.
Step IV - Complete the Privacy Profile
The Privacy Profile is the basis for determining an organization's eligibility for the BBBOnLine Privacy seal. You must complete all statements. Please review the Privacy Profile and Help Document in PDF form before you start working on the interactive version.

Once BBBOnLine has reviewed your website and has notified you of any outstanding issues, you are required to respond to BBBOnLine within 60 days. After 60 days without a response, all applications are considered inactive and companies will need to resubmit a new application and privacy profile, including additional application and evaluation fees.

Note: After receiving your application, annual assessment fee and signed Particiaton Agreement, your Privacy Profile will be assigned to a Compliance Analyst for review.

Step V - Install the Seal on Your Website
After your Privacy Profile has been reviewed and your company has been approved you will receive an e-mail with instructions on how to install the seal on your website.
